What to Pack for Cleveland in Winter: A Checklist for Longer Stays

By Theo

A surgery date, a rotation that starts in January, a travel nursing contract, or a family visit over the holidays can bring you to Cleveland, Ohio, between November and March. You may not get to choose the season, but you can pack for it. This checklist is for stays of a week or more, when winter gear becomes part of your daily routine.

We host guests all winter in Little Italy, Ohio City, and Larchmere. Here's what we'd pack and what to expect.

What Cleveland winters are like

Cleveland winters are cold, often gray, and snowy. Some of that snow is lake-effect snow. As the National Weather Service explains, it forms when cold air moves across the open, relatively warm waters of the Great Lakes. The air picks up warmth and moisture, building narrow bands that can drop 2 to 3 inches of snow per hour or more.

Wind direction determines where those bands land. Heavy snow can fall in one spot while the sun shines a mile or two away.

For current conditions and forecasts, use the National Weather Service Cleveland office. The NWS Cleveland site also has climate data, so check it for the months you'll be in town. For winter safety basics, see the NWS winter safety page.

Winter packing checklist for longer stays

Clothing and layers

  • A warm, windproof and waterproof winter coat. Wind off the lake makes cold feel colder.
  • Thermal base layers, top and bottom, for days you'll be outside or waiting at stops
  • Fleece or wool mid-layers you can take off indoors
  • A hat that covers your ears, a scarf or neck gaiter, and insulated gloves, plus a thin pair for using your phone
  • Several pairs of wool or synthetic socks. Cotton stays wet.

Footwear

  • Waterproof, insulated boots with real tread. Slush is the norm after a snowfall.
  • Slip-on traction cleats for icy sidewalks and steps
  • Indoor shoes or slippers, so wet boots can stay by the door

For long hospital or clinic days

Hospitals are warm inside and cold at the door. If you're a patient or caregiver, pack:

  • Layers you can take off and carry. A packable down or synthetic jacket works well.
  • A tote for boots or a change of shoes
  • Lip balm and hand cream. Winter air is dry, indoors and out.
  • A phone charger and a small power bank for long waits
  • A reusable water bottle and snacks
  • Copies of your appointment details. Cleveland Clinic's Where To Stay and transportation pages are worth bookmarking.

For drivers

  • An ice scraper and snow brush. Don't assume a rental car has one.
  • Washer fluid rated for freezing temperatures
  • A phone mount and charger
  • A small emergency kit: blanket, gloves, flashlight, water, and snacks
  • Check road conditions before you go on OHGO, Ohio's traffic and road-conditions site.

For guests flying in without a car

  • Boots you can walk in for 10+ minutes at a time
  • A backpack rather than a rolling bag. Wheels and slush don't mix.
  • RTA routes saved on your phone. See riderta.com. Our Little Italy homes are a couple of minutes' walk from the Red Line station. The Red Line runs to Cleveland Hopkins Airport.

Lake-effect snow: what it means for your trip

  • Expect variability. One part of the region can get much more snow than another on the same day, depending on where the bands set up.
  • Give yourself extra time. For early appointments or shift starts, allow extra travel time on snowy mornings and check conditions before you leave.
  • Watch the forecast for snow bands, not just daily totals. NWS Cleveland issues winter weather alerts.

Parking and snow at our homes

Parking type matters more in winter. Here's the parking listed for our homes:

AreaParking listed
Ohio City (all 5 homes)Free on-site parking
Larchmere houseFree on-site parking
4-bedroom near Cleveland Clinic main campusLong driveway with dedicated guest parking
Little ItalyDriveway parking is first come, first served. Message us to inquire about it; it is not guaranteed. Street parking is also nearby.

Snow clearing: when snow is expected, we clear driveways, walks, and steps ahead of guest arrivals. Lake-effect snow can come fast, so wear boots with real tread and take steps carefully.

City street-parking rules during snow: during a major storm, the City of Cleveland can declare a Snow Emergency Parking Ban. Cars aren't allowed on streets with posted red-and-white snow emergency signs while the ban lasts, and cars left there can be ticketed and towed. If you park on the street, check the City's winter and snow page for current bans and its snowplow tracker.

If you're driving in for a long winter stay, the free on-site parking at our Ohio City homes and the Larchmere house makes life easier. If you'd rather leave the car at home, Little Italy is walkable to Case Western, University Hospitals, and the Red Line.

Stairs in winter: two of our four Little Italy apartments are on the first floor. The other two are about 15 steps up. The 4-bedroom near the Clinic is on the second and third floors. If icy steps are a concern after surgery, choose by floor first.

Indoor things to do during a winter stay

Long winter stays are better with something to look forward to. Here are a few indoor options near our neighborhoods:

  • University Circle museums, next to Little Italy, including the Cleveland Museum of Art. Check clevelandart.org for current hours and admission.
  • Severance Music Center, also in University Circle. Check the Cleveland Orchestra's calendar for the current season.
  • West Side Market in Ohio City, an indoor market. Check westsidemarket.org for current days and hours.
  • Cleveland Clinic runs a weekday museum shuttle between main campus and University Circle museums, according to its transportation page. Check current days and reservation rules.

Frequently asked questions

When is winter weather most likely in Cleveland?

Roughly November through March, though it varies year to year. Check NWS Cleveland for the forecast during your stay.

Do I need snow tires?

That depends on your car, your route, and the winter. Many visitors manage with all-season tires and careful driving, but check conditions on OHGO and give yourself extra time.

Is check-in affected by snow?

Our homes use self check-in with a smart lock, so you don't need to meet anyone in the cold. Check-in is at 3 p.m. and checkout is at 11 a.m. If weather delays your arrival, message us.

Can I extend if my stay runs into more winter?

Yes, if the dates are free. Tell us as early as you can.
