Staying Near University Hospitals and Rainbow Babies: Walk, Park, Eat

By Maya

When someone you love is at University Hospitals in Cleveland, Ohio, the logistics pile up fast. Where will you sleep? How will you get back and forth? Where do you eat when you've been in a waiting room all day? Can you do a load of laundry before the next long day?

This guide is for patients, parents, partners, and caregivers coming to UH Cleveland Medical Center, including UH Rainbow Babies & Children's Hospital. It covers lodging options near the hospital, parking, food nearby, and why Little Italy, right next door, is such a practical base. We're a small local team with furnished homes a short walk from UH, and we'll also say when another option fits better.

Where University Hospitals is

According to University Hospitals, UH Cleveland Medical Center is the system's main campus, at 11100 Euclid Avenue in University Circle. The campus is home to three hospitals: UH Rainbow Babies & Children's Hospital, UH MacDonald Women's Hospital, and UH Seidman Cancer Center.

University Circle is a dense, walkable district on Cleveland's east side. Case Western Reserve University's campus is right alongside the hospital, and the Cleveland Museum of Art and other museums are nearby. Little Italy sits just to the east.

It's worth knowing that Cleveland Clinic's main campus is a separate campus, farther west along Euclid Avenue. Its on-campus hotels and shuttle are set up for Clinic patients. If your care is at UH, you'll want to be in University Circle or Little Italy instead.

Lodging options near UH

Hotels in University Circle

UH's Rainbow accommodations page lists hotels in University Circle and downtown, and notes that many offer discounts for University Hospitals patients and families. Ask about UH rates when you call.

A hotel makes sense for one to three nights, especially if you want a front desk and daily housekeeping.

Ronald McDonald House and Hope Lodge

The same UH page lists two nonprofit options nearby:

  • Ronald McDonald House, at 10415 Euclid Avenue. According to Ronald McDonald House Northeast Ohio, it serves families with a child being treated at a Cleveland-area medical center, and offers a free shuttle to UH Rainbow Babies & Children's Hospital.
  • American Cancer Society Hope Lodge, on Mayfield Road, which offers free lodging for adult cancer patients and their families with a referral.

If you qualify, ask your social worker or care team about these early. Each has its own eligibility rules and waitlists.

Furnished homes

A furnished apartment gives you a separate bedroom, a kitchen, and laundry. It's a good fit when:

  • Two or more people are traveling and want separate rooms.
  • The stay is a week or longer, or the end date isn't clear.
  • You'd like to cook familiar food and keep a routine.
  • You're bringing a pet.

There's no front desk, and we don't do scheduled mid-stay cleaning. In exchange, you get space, privacy, and a door that closes on a hard day. If you'd like a refresh during a long stay, message us.

Walking from Little Italy

Little Italy is right next to University Circle. From our Little Italy homes, University Hospitals and Case Western are about a five-minute walk. That short walk makes a real difference:

  • You can leave the car at home, or skip renting one.
  • Shift changes and late updates are easier. You can walk over without dealing with a garage.
  • Partners can trade off. One person stays at the bedside while the other walks back to shower, sleep, or do laundry.

The Little Italy–University Circle Red Line station is also a short walk, with direct trains to downtown and Cleveland Hopkins Airport. University Circle's free CircleLink shuttle connects Little Italy, UH, and Case; see universitycircle.org for routes and hours.

Parking at UH

If you're driving in, UH's parking page lists two main visitor garages:

  • UH Drive garage, entered from Euclid Avenue via UH Drive.
  • Adelbert garage, on Adelbert Road, next to Rainbow Babies & Children's Hospital. UH lists it for access to Rainbow and MacDonald Women's Hospital.

UH posts its current visitor rates on that page and notes that long-term parking passes are available for patients and families. If you'll be visiting daily for a while, ask about them. Valet service for patients and visitors who need assistance is also listed there.

At our Little Italy homes: Driveway parking is first come, first served. Message us to inquire about it; it is not guaranteed. Street parking is also nearby. Since UH is a short walk away, you may find you rarely move the car.

Where to eat

Hospital days are long, and food matters more than people expect.

  • Little Italy, along Mayfield Road: bakeries, cafés, sandwich shops, and Italian restaurants, a few minutes' walk from UH. Good for a real meal or a box of pastries to bring back to the unit. See our Little Italy guide.
  • University Circle: cafés and restaurants around campus and Uptown, plus museum cafés.
  • The hospital itself: UH lists cafés and nutrition services on its patient and visitor pages.
  • Your own kitchen: on a long stay, cooking at home saves money and lets you eat what you need. Every one of our homes has a full kitchen.

Our homes near UH

These two Little Italy apartments are on the first floor, which helps after a long day or if anyone has trouble with stairs:

Both use self check-in with a smart lock (check-in 3 p.m., checkout 11 a.m.) and welcome pets, with any pet fee shown before you pay. Smoking isn't allowed at any of our homes. See all University Circle stays.

When the stay gets longer

Hospital stays have a way of stretching. A few things we've learned:

  • Ask about extensions early. If the home is free, we'll extend your stay. If it isn't, we'll check our other homes nearby.
  • Monthly stays include utilities. Electricity, heat, water, and internet are included, with no separate bill. See furnished monthly rentals in Cleveland.
  • Keep one line of contact. When you book on our site, your booking details include a messaging link. A small local team answers, and you won't be repeating your situation to someone new each time.
  • Coming back for follow-ups? Book on our site again and tell us when you'll be in town. You'll already know the home and the walk.
