Ohio City, Cleveland: A Visitor's Guide to the West Side Market Neighborhood

By Priya

Ohio City is where a lot of visitors end up falling for Cleveland, Ohio. It's just across the Cuyahoga River from downtown, it's home to a public market that has been open since 1912, and its streets are full of old brick homes, restaurants, and local bars.

It's also practical. Every one of our Ohio City homes lists free on-site parking, downtown is close, and MetroHealth's main campus is on the same side of town. Guests here include people in town for work downtown, travel nurses, families visiting for a weekend, and anyone who wants a lively neighborhood with an easy place to park.

This guide covers what Ohio City is like, the West Side Market, eating and getting around, how it compares to our east-side neighborhoods, and what to expect at our homes.

Ohio City in a nutshell

Ohio City is one of Cleveland's oldest neighborhoods, on the near west side. The heart of it is the area around West 25th Street and Lorain Avenue, where the West Side Market stands. From there, side streets of 19th- and early 20th-century houses spread out in every direction.

Who it suits best

  • Drivers. Free on-site parking is listed at all five of our homes here.
  • Downtown work trips. Downtown is just across the river.
  • MetroHealth staff, patients, and families. Ohio City is on the west side, closer to MetroHealth's main campus than our east-side homes.
  • Food lovers. The market, plus restaurants and breweries within walking distance.
  • Travelers with a pet. Pets are welcome at our Ohio City homes; any pet fee shows before you pay.

Who might prefer another neighborhood

  • Car-free Cleveland Clinic patients. Main campus is on the east side, about 20–30 minutes by car on a weekday morning (approximate, depending on traffic). Without a car, you'll likely need a transfer or a rideshare. If you'll be at the Clinic daily, see where to stay near Cleveland Clinic.
  • Guests who want a quiet residential street. Ohio City is lively, especially around the market on weekends. For quiet, look at Larchmere.

The West Side Market

The West Side Market opened in 1912 and calls itself the largest and oldest public market in Cleveland. It's an anchor of the neighborhood and home to dozens of small businesses selling fresh produce, meat, seafood, baked goods, and prepared food. Some stands have been passed down through families for generations.

For guests, it's two things at once: a landmark worth visiting and a genuinely useful place to shop.

  • Stock your kitchen on day one. Since every one of our homes has a full kitchen, a market run is a good first errand on a longer stay.
  • Go early on busy days. Weekends draw crowds.
  • Check hours before you go. The market isn't open every day, and hours can change around holidays. Current hours are on westsidemarket.org.
  • Bring a bag, and if you're driving, check the market's parking and directions page.

Eating, drinking, and wandering

West 25th Street and the blocks around the market are full of restaurants, cafés, bakeries, and breweries. Ohio City is a neighborhood where you can walk to dinner, try a few places over a week, and still cook most nights.

A few tips:

  • Weeknights are easier than weekends if you want a table without a wait.
  • Walk the side streets. The residential blocks have some of the city's best-preserved older houses.
  • Hours change. Many places are independent; check before you go.

The Red Line

The West 25th–Ohio City Red Line station is by the West Side Market. The Red Line runs west to Cleveland Hopkins Airport and east through Tower City downtown to University Circle. How far your door is from the station depends on which home you choose, so check the map on the listing. Schedules and fares are on riderta.com.

Driving and parking

This is where Ohio City shines. All five of our homes here list free on-site parking, so you can come and go without hunting for a street spot. That matters most in winter, when the City of Cleveland may declare a Snow Emergency Parking Ban on posted streets. When snow is expected, we clear driveways, walks, and steps ahead of guest arrivals.
