Larchmere and Shaker Square: A Quiet East-Side Base for Longer Stays
By Jordan
Some stays need a little more room than an apartment. Maybe you're driving in for weeks of treatment at Cleveland Clinic and want a quiet street to come home to. Maybe you're bringing a dog. Maybe two or three family members are taking turns as caregivers and everyone needs a door that closes.
That's when we suggest Larchmere. It's a residential east-side neighborhood in Cleveland, Ohio, with a walkable strip of independent shops and restaurants, historic Shaker Square next door, and an easy drive to main campus. This guide covers what the neighborhood is like, what's nearby, how getting around works, and who our Larchmere house suits best.

Larchmere in a nutshell
Larchmere is a small neighborhood on Cleveland's east side, near the border with Shaker Heights. Its main street, Larchmere Boulevard, has been known for decades as the city's arts and antiques district. The Encyclopedia of Cleveland History at Case Western describes Larchmere as known for its restaurants, art, and antique stores, and as one of Cleveland's most successful arts and antiques districts.
Away from the boulevard, it's houses, porches, and tree-lined side streets. It feels residential, which is exactly why it works for longer stays. You get quiet evenings without being far from anything.
What it's good for
- Driving to Cleveland Clinic. Main campus is about 10–15 minutes by car, roughly 3–4 miles (approximate, depending on traffic).
- Traveling with a dog. Our house here has a fully fenced yard.
- Families and caregivers who need space. A standalone house with three bedrooms upstairs and two full baths.
- Longer, slower stays. A neighborhood where you can take a walk, find coffee, and browse a shop on a day off.
What it's less good for
- Going car-free to the hospitals. Transit from Larchmere to Cleveland Clinic or University Circle usually means a transfer, so most guests drive or use a rideshare. See getting around Cleveland without a car.
- Anyone who can't do stairs. At our Larchmere house, all bedrooms are upstairs.
Larchmere Boulevard: antiques, galleries, and a slower pace
Larchmere Boulevard is the kind of street you wander rather than shop with a list. Expect independent antique dealers, galleries, bookshops, and a handful of restaurants and cafés. It's a good place to spend an unhurried afternoon between appointments or on a weekend.
A few tips:
- Many shops are small and independently run, so hours vary. Check a shop's own site or listing before you make a special trip.
- It's a nice walk in any season, though in winter you'll want boots with tread.
- Check local listings for events. Neighborhood happenings change from season to season, so look at what's on during your stay.
Shaker Square: a historic square next door
One block south of Larchmere Boulevard is Shaker Square, one of the oldest planned shopping districts in the country. According to the Encyclopedia of Cleveland History, it was built in 1927–29 around the junction of the two branches of the Shaker Rapid Transit, laid out as an octagon with Colonial-style buildings, and listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1976.
Today, the Square has restaurants, shops, services, and a cinema, along with RTA rail stops in the middle. It's an easy evening out: dinner, a movie, and a short drive or walk home.
The Blue and Green lines
The two Shaker branches are now RTA's Blue and Green lines, and Shaker Square is a stop on both. They run toward downtown and Tower City, where you can connect to the Red Line and the HealthLine. Check riderta.com for current schedules. For daily trips to Cleveland Clinic, most of our Larchmere guests drive.

A few notes from hosting here:
- The fenced yard makes a difference for pet owners. Letting a dog out on a cold morning without leashing up makes a long stay much easier.
- Three bedrooms give caregivers real rest. If family members are trading shifts, each person can sleep in their own room.
- Two full baths mean mornings don't turn into a line.
- All bedrooms are upstairs. If someone in your group is recovering from surgery and stairs are hard, talk to your care team first, and look at our ground-floor options in Ohio City or the first-floor apartments in Little Italy.

Larchmere in winter
Winter is when the house's setup really helps:
- Free on-site parking means no hunting for a street spot after a storm.
- When snow is expected, we clear driveways, walks, and steps ahead of guest arrivals.
- In-unit laundry handles wet layers, towels, and pet blankets.
- A short walk to the boulevard gives you somewhere to go on days you don't feel like driving.
On monthly stays, electricity, heat, water, and internet are included, so heating the house through a Cleveland winter isn't a separate bill. For packing, see what to pack for Cleveland in winter.
